Mushrooms are the BOMB!

Mushrooms Are Taking Over In Plant-Based Meals

Last week I was privy to host Purple Sol Kitchen with an emphasis on mushrooms and their benefits. It was groovy! For those who missed the class, you won’t get to try the tasty Lion’s Mane Steak, the King Trumpet Mushrooms made as scallops and the ah-mazing Lobster Mushroom which tastes just like Lobster. You will however get to understand the benefits of mushrooms. The superfood many don’t know they like!!

Mushrooms are one of the most amazing and versatile ingredients in the world. Not only are they incredibly delicious, but they also offer a wide variety of health benefits that make them an ideal part of any diet. In this blog, we’ll dive a little deeper into the nutritional and health benefits that come with mushrooms and why they should be a staple in everyone’s kitchen.

Mushrooms come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. There are three main categories of mushrooms: culinary, medicinal, and wild. Culinary mushrooms are typically used for cooking, such as button, portobello, shiitake, oyster, and morel. Medicinal mushrooms are widely used for their powerful health benefits, such as reishi, cordyceps, maitake, and lion’s mane. Wild mushrooms are foraged for food and come in exotic varieties, like chanterelle, porcini, and hedgehog. Whenever you’re cooking with mushrooms, be sure to seek out fresh and high-quality mushrooms, as they will give you the best flavor and texture.

Mushrooms are low in calories, fat, and cholesterol, yet they’re full of essential vitamins and minerals. They contain many B vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, and B5, as well as niacin and folate. They’re also rich in vitamins D, E, and K, and have more potassium than bananas. On top of all that, mushrooms contain antioxidants like polyphenols and selenium that can help to prevent cellular damage and reduce inflammation.

Mushrooms are also a great source of dietary fiber and protein, which makes them a great addition to vegetarian and vegan diets. As a matter of fact, a single portobello mushroom contains 4 grams of protein. Additionally, mushrooms are believed to improve muscle recovery and help regulate blood sugar levels, making them perfect for post-workout snacking.

But the health benefits of mushrooms don’t stop there. Studies have shown that eating mushrooms regularly can help to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of several diseases, including type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Additionally, mushrooms are being studied for their potential anticancer properties, and several studies even suggest that the compounds in mushrooms can help to boost brain function.

From a culinary standpoint, mushrooms are used in a variety of dishes. From sautéed button mushrooms with garlic and butter, to stuffed portobello caps, to creamy mushroom soup, these fungal friends can turn any meal into a delicious and nutritious experience. They can also act as a meat replacement or serve as a great side dish.

So, there you have it – mushrooms are not only a tasty and versatile ingredient, but they also offer numerous health benefits. So, what are you waiting for? Get cooking!
